Ever notice that the birds seem to know more than you when it comes to the natural world? That’s phenonolgy! Don’t worry – If you spend a lifetime learning – you just might know as much as a bird by the time you’re old enough to pass that knowledge on to the next generation!
In this episode I talk to Alyssa Rosemartin about Phenology, which is (according to wikipedia):
“the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life”
Phenology is important to gardeners because we can use it to make decisions about when to sow & harvest, and it also can help us develop a deeper connection to our ecosystem.
Alyssa Rosemartin has worked at the USA National Phenology Network for the past 9 years, developing a national citizen science program, Nature’s Notebook, in which volunteers and professionals report on the timing of plant and animal life cycle events, like migration and flowering. Currently, she works with protected areas and indigenous communities on phenology, and supports data visualization and analysis. She has published and presented work in the fields of ecology, climate change, citizen science and data management. In her work, she is exploring how multiple ways of knowing and open science can lead to better outcomes for people and nature.
